Fence over Unistone Block Retaining Wall

Question
Hi. I am planning to put a fence, chain link fence, and i have a 60 ft back which i did several years ago in unistone blocks for a retaining wall cuz the wall went down about 3 feet. I was hoping to put the fence on the retaining wall but it seems like i am being told no as over the years with water going in the holes they drill, it will crack.
Help :)
Dominic

Answer
Hey, Dominic.

In your climate, if you let water get down in the holes, yes, I'm sure the blocks will crack. However, there are many things you can do to prevent water penetration.

Go outside and look at your roof. See all those pipes that are penetrating your roof. Think of your roof as the retaining wall, and all those pipes as your fence posts. In order to prevent water from entering your roof, we install flashing around the penetrations. That's all you need to do for your fence, too.

Visit your local home improvement store and tell them what you want to do. They should be able to recommend some appropriate types of flashing to help you out for your situation and your climate.

Hope that helps.
