Retaining Wall in Sand

Question
Hi,

I am installing a ~6ft tall retaining wall in my backyard.  The area where my house was built used to be sand dunes so my backyard (except for the first 1-2') is all sand.  I'm having difficulty keeping the sand from caving in on what I've dug out and I was wondering if you have any suggestions that might help.  I doubt there's anything full proof, but anything you think may help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
Hello:

Construct a caisson. This can be done with sheet or wood pilings. Drive the pilings into the sand and then excavate the sand from the caisson formed by the pilings.
