wet double-sloping backyard

Question

best view of slope
My backyard is a tall slope that goes from right to left as well as from back towards the front. And we are not at the highest point of either of these slopes. We discovered theres is an underground spring under several of our neighborhood streets. And my yard back and front (but mostly back) is a sopping wet mess almost constantly. Even the top of the slope is a muddy mess. Is there anything I can do to dry it out, even a little?

Answer
This is labor intensive but is relatively easy to fix. Dig a system of trenches 12" deep and 12" wide that are parallel to the slopes. About 5-10' on center. Connect these lateral drain lines at the ends or down the center to a main trench leading around the house to a lower are of the yard or a storm drain. Place 4" perforated pipe in the trenches, connect the pipes to a main drain line and cover perforated pipe with gravel. Cover gravel with filter fabric. You can cut fabric in 12" strips. It is typically sold in wider rolls. Cover filter fabric and main line with soil. Tamp soil lightly but do not compact excessively. Be sure all lines have min 2-3% slopes to drain. Make sure you do not create a drainage problem for a neighbor by piping all the water to one point of discharge at a neighbors property line. If possible tie drain line into the storm drain, a swale, ditch or some sort of drainage conveyance that will not create any problems for others.

you can find most of what you need at a local home store.
also see www.ndspro.com for typical fittings, etc available.
Your materials cost should not exceed $500 and if you pay some one to do this expect $1000-1500 for the job done right.

Best of Luck
