planting shrubs

Question
We just purchased 5 Burning Bushes. We want to hide a chainlink fence, (or just make it look better). We are unsure how far away from the fence to plant them. Please help.

Answer
Vicki,

One of the biggest mistakes made in the garden is planting position of shrubs because many are purchased small and when spaced according to mature size the garden does not look right.  Always plant to mature size.

Shrubs should be planted about 1.5 times the radius of the mature size of the shrub away from objects.  IN other words, if a shrub has a mature diameter of 4 feet it should be planted 3 feet away from an object.

Burning bushes can easily reach a diameter of 5 feet. So the radius would be 2.25 feet times 1.5 and needs to be planted about 3.5 feet from the fence.

I hope this helps and was not too confusing.
