Blue Spruce transplant

Question
I have a 10' blue spruce that I want to transplant to my new home.  It has sentimental value and the developers that bought our property said they would probably trash all of our leylands & spruces for the development so we'd like to take a few with us.

Leylands are 12'-15'.  Is it possible to do it ourselves and if so what do and when should we do it.

Answer
Alisa,
We also just moved to a new house in the country and I took my 6 year old Blue Spruce with me and transplanted it. It looked fine for a while but it did not survive. I believe though that it was due to my husband spraying too much weed killer around it because it was fine for the first 2 months. That was actually the third time we had transplanted it and it did fine for those first two transplants as I believe it would have been fine if not for the mishap with the weed killer.I was very heartbroken about it. But all you can do is try it. Just make sure you dig well away from the root ball with a good sharp spade and get all the roots when digging it up. You need to dig a hole where you will be planting it so that it is ready to plant immediately.Water it very deeply the first time and use some fresh potting soil mixed in with the existing soil from the hole.Pick out any roots or rocks or hard dirt clods first. It is best to water deeply about every week if you don't get any rainfall.
Gardening takes patience so all you can do is wait and see.
Good luck. I hope yours makes it and you can enjoy it for many years!
