Upstate NY , found in woods

Question
I am located in Otsego County in upstate NY.  Two weeks ago I was putting horse fence down in our woods.  I came across a plant that has a white//brown stem about 7-8" tall.  There are two shoots coming off of the main stem from opposite each other and each shoot contained three oval shaped leaves coming from the same shoot.  At the top of the stem there is a black cone shaped structure that is about .5 to .75 inches in height.  On the outside of the black cone shaped thing are little red seed capsule looking things.  You can see that most of the red things have somehow came off and there are about 8 or 9 still on it.  I picked it because I didn't want my horse getting into it.  I tought environmetal ed. years ago and had some plant guides, but can't seem to find anything remotely similar.  It is the only plant like it that I saw in the area.  Can you help me?

Thanks,
Sheri

Answer
Hello Sheri,

I'm still working on your ID...don't want you to think I have forgotten you!

I didn't recognize your description so I have ran it through my weed ID's with no results.
Do you think it is an "escapie" from a garden? Could it be ornamental?
Have you seen anymore so that you might possible send a picture?

Thank you,
Angie
