garden veges

Question
I purchased what I thought was green bell peppers for my garden this year.   To my surprise I kept harvesting black peppers with green insides..  Are these normal????    I did not save the little identify tag from the plants, boy they sure looked funny.. thanks

Answer
Faye, there are many new hybrid peppers on the market today. They include chocolate belle, licorice, and orange belles.  These varieties are simply in reference to their color, not their taste.  But novelty vegetables are becoming more popular everyday.  I believe this is because they offer more diversity than the traditional bell peppers, without compromising taste.  Attached is an example of one of the varieties I have listed:

You can find more at http://www.burpee.com  Just go to vegetables / peppers on their menu.

What most likely happened is that the nursery mistagged the seedling.  This unfortunately happens quite frequently since it is next to impossible to distinguish young seedlings prior to them setting fruit.  As with all colored pepper varieties, the insides will be green regardless of the exterior.

I hope this answered your question.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
