picking asparagus

Question
My husband picks the asparagus by cutting it just below ground
level.  Is this correct or should he be snapping them with his
hand as someone told him.

Answer
Franca, either method works just fine.  However, I prefer to cut mine just above soil level rather than below.  The short top growth actually helps the crowns and roots to grow healthier by absorbing the sunlight and oxygen.

This fall, mound the plants with shredded leaves, compost, or straw to protect the crowns.  In the spring, remove the dead foliage by cutting them just above soil level.  You should then get excellent growth and a good harvest next summer.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
