Watermelons and cantelopes

Question
I think I have planted my watermelons and cantelopes too close together.  Is there a problem with having the plants too close?

Answer
Dear Diane White,
It seems that certain vining fruits can cross when too close and I know watermelon is one of them.  So you may end up with cantemelons or waterloupes.  Cucumbers can do the same thing.  I plant "vining hill produce," anything in the melon family; in corners of our garden to avoid this.
But don't worry, even if they do cross, the flavor is not bad, it's the difference in the rinds that are a concern. The watermelon rinds may not be as hard or durable as ordinarily and the canteloupe rinds could be much thicker.  But those are just possibilities.  Your produce will still be edible and it may be an interesting flavor for this summer.  And everything may just grow it's usual way.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
