Fire Ants

Question
I live in Statesboro, GA. I have two tomato plants in large containers in our yard. The Roma plant has a small variety of ants nesting in it and the bush tomato plant is full of fireants. I learned years ago that if you disturb a fireant nest by digging up part of it, on a daily basis, that they will find a new home after a couple of days. It worked for the roma pot.  I have been doing this for a week now and they will not leave my bush tomato pot! I cannot find the diatomaceous earth that you recommended to someone else. They have not bothered the plant as far as I can tell and my plant is covered in blooms. I would like to get rid of them before they begin to do damage. I appreciate any help. Have a great week.  Lori

Answer
Lori, there are several controls you can use, but most of them involve chemicals. That is why I always recommend diatomaceous earth around vegetables. I have found this organic product readily available at most garden centers and all nurseries. I am attaching some links that will enable you to purchase this product on-line. I am also attaching a second link that markets a product that uses ant traps. Although the trap contains a chemical, it remains in the trap and will not leach into the soil.
