Club Root in Brassicas

Question
How deed do the club root spores go in the soil?
Whdn solarizing the soil, how high does the temperature need to reach to be effective in killing the spores?
How do you disinfect tools to prevent spreading the spores/

Answer
Most fungus spores are spread through the air. Once in the soil, they are absorbed by the root hairs. The worst thing about club root is that the spores can survive in the soil for up to five years. Even plant rotation will not avoid a reoccurrence.

To properly solarize the soil, you need to lay clear or black 2 mil plastic over the infected area for 6 weeks. It is best to do this at the hottest time of year, usually in July or August, in order to get the soil to the 125F (52C) degrees necessary to kill the spores.

As you infer, you should also disinfect any pruners or other tools used on plants in that area. I recommend one part bleach to ten parts water.

I hope this answered your question.

Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
