Mother-in-Law Plant - Root Rot

Question
Hi Will,

Based on one of your past responses I believe my mother-in-law plant is suffering from root rot.  It had been doing fabulous in indirect light, for the last 5 years.  I repotted it two years ago.  I believe I became more diligent about watering it 4 mos ago and now  the outer shoots are sagging a bit and need to be staked up.  The leaves are about 2.5-3 feet tall.

Is the plant salvagable or, once root rot sets in, is it terminal?  Can I simply stop watering it for a period until the soil dries out sufficiently?  If it is terminal can I try to root a leaf or two in some rooting media?

The plant belonged to my mother who passed on 6 years ago.  Unfortunately her green thumb didn't get passed onto me.  I'd appreciate any help you can give to revive the plant.

Thanks in advance!

Pam

Answer
Hi Pam,

Five years in indirect light is a long time for a Sansevieria. Yes, probably the roots have been in the process of rotting for a long time and it will be difficult to salvage. The repotting may have put it over the edge.

You can try downsizing it into a smaller pot, removing all the soil except what is in direct contact with the roots. If the roots look soft, mushy, and have an unpleasant odor, then you can assume the roots have rotted. At that point take some stem cuttings, let them heal over in the air overnight and then plant them in a small pot filled with a porous potting mix.

If the roots seem healthy, then the soil will dry out sooner in a smaller pot with less soil. Move it to a sunnier location and make sure the soil is dry all the way to the bottom before you water.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
