Tomatoes in pots

Question
I would like to grow tomatoes in large 10"x12" pots. Is there anything special I need to do? I am looking at early girls, sweet 100s and champion tomatoes. I live in AZ

Answer
Terry, make sure you only grow one plant per pot. Use an organic mix or a fertile potting soil as your medium. Water sparingly and only when needed. When you do water, water deeply. This will force the roots down where they can get the most moisture and nutrients. Shallow watering causes the roots to reach for the surface, resulting in weak plants with poor production.

Fertilize once per month with a product high in phosphorus. When using organic soil, it is not necessary to fertilize more frequently. Most of the fertilizer companies sell products specifically for tomatoes and peppers. These will increase your harvest and the size of your fruit.

Finally, keep the tomatoes in full sun. Tomatoes and peppers need a minimum of 8-10 hours of sun per day. Any less and the plants will be stunted.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever provide assistance.

Regards,

Mike
