planting tomatos too late?

Question
Hi Elyse

I am currently in the process of planting tomatos which I bought as seedlings at a shop, as it's getting much warmer and they've really shot up.  I'm a little worried however as some of the seedlings were already beginning to flower (one or two) before I planted them, and i read on the internet that they won't produce tomatoes if this is the case.  Do you think this will really affect them?

I am also uncertain about how to use liquid fertiliser on them.  I follow the quantity instructions and all, but can you water with water+fertiliser around the base of the plant, or is that too close and burn the plant?

Thank you, your advice woud be appreciated

Answer
Dom:
Just pinch the flowers off. It won't be any problem. You may need to continue to pick off the flowers until the plant is large enough to support any fruit.

You want to water where the roots are, so when the plant is small, that is around the base, the diameter of the pot it was in. However, if you fed them when you planted them, then that is enough. If you feel the need, you can feed them again when they begin to set fruit.
