Flies in soil and on plants

Question
Hi,  I have an indoor jasmine plant and a korean plant called Angels wings.  I recently repotted these plants and now find lots of flies in and around the plants and of course the flies don't restrict themselves in just that area they're becoming a nuisance elsewhere also. I did try diluting 1 part dishwashing liquid to 2 parts water and spraying the leaves and the soil but I'm seeing more activity.  I'm concerned not just for the plants but also how they effect me and my family.  Help

Answer
Zubeda,

They are fungus gnats and are attacking the plants because you are keeping the plants too wet and the roots are rotting. The roots were damaged in the repotting and are not recuperating because this is the wrong time of year to repot. The days are getting shorter and the roots do not grow as well. You need to keep the plants dryer and they will slowly recuperate and the gnats will go away. They will not hurt you or your fammily. Good luck.
