Baking Soda mix for tomato spraying

Question
My old Italian Grandfather tells me that he used a mix in warm water (1qt) tablespoon of Baking soda , teaspoon of dishwasher soap & 1 tablespoon of Vegetable oil to spray tomato plants for insects.  What do you think?

Answer
Mike:
This is an efficient spray for mildew or aphids. I'm not sure if it would be useful against any other insects. I think the ingredients should be mixed into a gallon of water though, not a quart. If you want to test the stronger solution, do so on just one plant and wait 24 hours to be sure there are no adverse effects.
