Fertilizing

Question
Hi Mike,
I have a small backyard vegetable garden that is aprox. 14' x 24' (336 sq. ft.) I just limed it to raise the ph and am wondering if I can go right behind it and fertilize. I bought a basic 10-10-10 fertilizer to apply. The lime will be on ground for about a week before i fertilize. I have read some posts that say I should not fertilize and lime so close and others say that this is a myth, the two have no bearing on each other. Any help is greatly appreciated.

                                   Thanks,
                                       Glenn

Answer
The two are completely unrelated. You are safe to fertilize at the same time as applying lime. The lime will sweeten the soil by neutralizing the ph levels while the fertilizer will provide the nutrients needed for strong and healthy plants. I have done it many times and have never experienced bad results.

Good luck with your garden.

Regards,

Mike
