fertlizers

Question
Is it ok to fertlize plants after they have entered the flowering stage.

They have been flowering for about 2 weeks

Answer
Eli, if you are talking about indoor houseplants, you can fertilize them any time you want.

If you are fertilizing outdoor plants, however, or something that is headed toward dormancy, fertilizing now is asking for trouble.  Fertilizing now would stimulate new leaves and buds.  Instead of getting ready for the winter nap, the plant would be staying awake.  Along comes winter, and boom, all that new leaf and stem tissue is wiped out.  You get a lot of damage.

A windowsill houseplant however will be perfectly happy with fertilizer even while it's blooming.  The right stuff will in fact help it bloom even better.  Tell me a little more and we can talk turkey.  Thanks for writing.
