what is the cause of green stripes on the yellow squash

Emma, you have nothing to be concerned with. Certain varieties of squash, including popular ones such as butternut squash, develop green stripes as they mature. This is absolutely a normal part of the maturation process. As the squash ripens, the green stripes gradually disappear. Once they are totally gone, the squash is usually ready to harvest.
