I don't know what zone you live in, so I don't know if you can plant it out side. The hardiness of the plant depends on the variety of Avacado you have. I don't know what variety it is. Although avocados are usually hardy to 20-24 degrees, flowers form in winter, and temperatures much below freezing destroy the crop. There are Mexican or Guatemalan Avacados. The Mexican variety is hardier and have smaller fruit.
They are shallow rooted. So water lightly and often. BUT DON'T OVER WATER. They need very good drainage. Moist, but not wet, soil.
If you plant it outside, remember it will get over 30 feet tall and even wider then that. So give it room.

Without knowing more about your plant, I am afraid that is all of the information I can give you.

Answer
Again, without knowing the variety, it would be difficult to determine the hardiness. My best advise is to plant it in the in the way I mentioned and give it some protection from the frost and wind, for the first few years, until it is established. You will not get fruit from a plant so small, for a few years. It may possibly take five years to yeild anything. But, it would be worth the wait, if it becomes a tree. One other thing, they shed leaves all year long, so don't be alarmed.
