Perneals in pots?

Question
My soil is all rocky dry clay....very hard to
work with.  I have some areas where I have dug out clay etc. and mixed in top soil, peat moss and humis and things do fairly well there.  But it is time to extend my garden.......
Instead of digging it all out, a lot of work and expense, can I put the perneals in large pots, sink them into the ground and mulch around them?
I am thinking it will save time, the additives to the soil and make it easier when it is time to thin them out.  I am getting much older and
have to keep the future work in mind also.

Thank you,
Vicki

Answer
I sympathize with you. I, too have this problem. I don't feel compelled to dig a hole that deep in this hard soil. It takes a pretty big hole to put pots in the soil, but if you don't mind, it will work fine.
Remember that clay does not drain well, so in the bottom of the hole, put some stones, to keep the pot up out of the water.
It would be helpful to know what perennials you plan to plant, but most will give  flowers for a few weeks.
Phlox, Verbena, Snapdragon, Coreopsis, Yarrow, Dianthus, and Shasta daisy are a few good ones.
