cut or not?

Question
Rick,

Last year was the first time that I planted mums in my flower beds.  When I put them in they were blooming and full.  They have come up strong, but very leggy.  I have heard that trimming them up until July 4th is recommended, but first I wanted to know if and when I should cut them and if so how much should I leave above ground so that they become bushy and full in the fall?  Thank you for your help.

Mark

Answer
do cut....in spring when they get 12" tall cut it back to 6". when it then gets 18" tall cut it back to 12". when it gets 24" cut it back to 18". about that time of the year (in southern NJ-august) it will begin to set flower buds. wait & let it flower in late aug - November. repeat the schedule every year. the timing all depends on where you live. visit a local garden center/nursery and see when to do this in your area.
good luck
