window boxes

Question
Hi We own a market in Montpelier VT, zone four I think.  and I am looking for bright cheerful blooming flowers to put boxes along our outside porch.  We can certainly water and deadhead but really need something pretty low maintenance as well.  I thought of the standard impatiens but wondered if you might have an idea about something a little more exciting.

Answer
My favorite is Dianthus "Pinks". It is a strong plant that will take the commercial traffic. This is important to conceder when choosing your plants. I think of impatiens as shade plants, so I am not sure if you were looking for something for a shaded area. Pinks will prefer sun, but will take some shade. Verbena is another great plant. I like the homestead pink or purple variety. It softens the containers and blooms for a long time. Alyssum for white edging will look nice, again it is a tough plant. Try Lobelia for it's contrasting blue on the edge with the alyssum. These plants will all tolerate some shade and traffic, and still be beautiful and exciting. These plant will bloom all summer. For cool weather planting, try Pansies and bulbs.
