Pampas Grass – Turning brown

Q: We have one large pampas grass clump in the front yard and 2 in the back. They are brown and droopy. Is May too late to cut back to a few feet off the ground now..should we fertilize?

A: The bad-looking clump may just be too old…they need to be divided every 3 – 4 years. If you have any greenery on the bad clumps, dig up the whole thing, slice out the green sprouts with their root systems and plant back in the old spot. Discard all of the dead parts.

Fertilize lightly afterwards.
