Wisteria- Growth

Q: Twelve years ago I planted a wisteria along a chain link fence for privacy. It is a constant pruning chore, at least every week or two. I’m trying to make my landscape less labor intensive. If I chop it to one foot high would it likely get out of control again?

A: It will certainly run rampant again in a few years. I’d cut it at ground level and immediately paint the stump with glyphosate (Roundup). Root sprouts will emerge nearby for two years. Spray them with broadleaf weed killer (Weed B Gon, etc).If you are tempted to plant a wisteria in the future, consider American wisteria, Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’, for its ease of care.
