Red Shield Hibiscus – Growing Here?

Q: My parents have a beautiful Red Shield Hibiscus growing in their back yard an hour north of Tampa. Will the plant grow in Loganville? Will it have to be brought inside in the winter?

A: Hibiscus acetosella or ‘Red Shield’ is a striking plant with its purple foliage but it is not hardy in Loganville. It might survive as far north as Macon with a bit of winter protection.
