Bermudagrass – Going to seed

Q: I have been told that you should and that you should not let bermudagrass go to seed. Which is correct and why?

A: I see no problem with letting bermudagrass go to seed, other than an observation that you may be mowing too infrequently. A good mowing schedule would have you walking behind your mower too often to allow seeds to form.

If the grass is common bermudagrass, the seed help keep it thick but the seed also help the turfgrass invade neighboring flower beds. If the turf is bermudagrass sod, the seedheads produce sterile seed so they have no effect, other than appearance, on the lawn.
