Overview

Hybrid poplars are fast-growing trees that can potentially shade a one-story house in three years. Plant your tree as soon as possible after purchasing it. If you can't plant it right away, store it in a cool place such as a garage and water the roots in the meantime. Hybrid poplars should be planted at least six weeks before the first frost so they can get adjusted to their new environment.

Step 1

Choose your location. Allow enough room for your hybrid poplar to grow up to 60 feet tall and 25 feet wide. It can thrive in most soils, but select a location that has loose and well-drained soil for best results.

Step 2

Dig a hole that is as deep as the root ball and two times as wide.

Step 3

Remove the tree from its container, if it has one, and place the root ball in the hole. Cover the roots with soil and pack it down so there are no air pockets.

Step 4

Water your tree well and keep it watered during the summer.

Step 5

Consider clearing away all grasses and weeds 2 to 3 feet around your tree and cover the base area with mulch. This will allow your tree to soak in more water and nutrients.
