This specimen is grown for its stunning golden leaves, which turn to brilliant shades of orange and red in autumn. It may or may not produce the smoke-like plumes typical of the genus.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
Cotinus are outstanding specimens in a shrub border, and are a great choice for massing or for hedges.
Care:
Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. These plants are tolerant of alkaline soils; moist, clay soils; and dry, rocky soils. The leaves may scorch in full sun, but only during stress by drought. They need minimal pruning to maintain a healthy framework, or alternatively, may be coppiced to produce large, dramatic foliage on varieties with colorful foliage (this is at the expense of generous flowering).
Propagation:
Sow seed in autumn, layer in spring, and take softwood cuttings in summer.
Problems:
Verticillium wilt.
