Aquilegia canadensis

Canadian columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) ak-will-EE-zsah kan-ah-DEN-sis Genus:  Aquilegia

This airy perennial has ternate dark green leaves, and produces many nodding flowers from midspring to midsummer. Its scarlet flowers have yellow, downward-pointing sepals.

Noteworthy Characteristics: 

Self seeds. Attracts hummingbirds. U.S. native.

Care: 

Provide full sun to part shade and medium to dry soil.

Propagation: 

Sow seed in a cold frame in spring. Can divide cultivars in spring but plants respond slowly to root disturbance.

Problems: 

Powdery mildew, rust, fungal leaf spots. Aphids, leaf miners, and caterpillars.
