Garden Walling And Building Your Own Wall

One way to improve the look of your garden and to save money at the same time is to take some time to build a garden wall yourself, rather than get a professional to do so for you. Here are a few tips on garden walling.

First of all, you might ask yourself whether your garden wall will need foundations. Well, this is not a hundred per cent necessary but can make the wall more steady depending on its size. The best thing that you can do is to dig yourself a little trench about 50 cm wide and 20 cm deep into the ground. You should then place level pegs down at the bottom of the trench and fill with cement to their tops.

Once you have done this you can decide how wide and how high you would like your wall to be. When it comes to stone garden walls you should look to keep them below a metre in height.

When it comes to the build you should choose your materials carefully. It is all down to your own personal tastes and the layout and look of your garden as to how you go about this. Flat stones or bricks are easier to lay than rounded stones, but the latter may provide a more pleasant look. You need to consider whether the wall is being build for aesthetics of for practicality.

However you choose your wall to look, you need to make sure that the stones at the base of the wall are flat and easily placed. Once you have a solid foundation, then find some smaller stones to build up the sides of the wall. If you are using flat stones then your job will be a lot easier, but a lot of fun can be had with the jigsaw of the curved stones. Try to mix it up and fit all of your stones in together as best you can.

When it comes to the top of the wall you should have made sure that all of the wall had fitted together well and that there are no vogue stones sticking out on either side. The top should ideally be about 30 cm wide. Here you should have saved some more flat stones to place along the top. You will also be able to populate your wall with different plants along its base, and also those that will grow up onto it and mellow the look of the wall.

These are just a few tips on building your own garden wall.
