Garden Walling And Building Your Garden Wall

The garden is a place that many people use to escape their everyday lives. It is somewhere where you are able to sit and relax and watch the world go by. It is also somewhere where you are able to grow things like flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables. There are many ways in which you can customise your garden and one of these is by adding a garden wall. If you are looking to build a stone wall over a metre high you will most likely need to bring in the professionals. If however you are going under this height you will be able to build the wall yourself. Here are a few tips on garden walling and making your own stone garden wall.

Before you embark on any attempt at building this wall you will first need to chat to your local building inspector. Here will be able to let your know about all of the community codes that might affect your plans. In some cases, there will be restrictions on what you can do so you need to be sure of this before you spend time and money bringing in the materials.

The materials you will needs will be the stones and the cement used to glue everything together. You will need to get your hands on 300 lbs of stone for every 2 to 2.5 cubic feet of wall that you are aiming to build. Your wall should also be about three times taller than it is wide, so that should be about one foot wide by three feet tall.

You will then need to dig a trench to use as a foundation. This should be twice as wide as the wall and about six inches deep. You will then need to fill in the trench with cement or gravel.

Finally you will then be able to start off with your build. You should use the flattest and biggest stones at the base of the wall to offer the most support. You will then need to build the body up using the medium sized and angular stones.

When your main wall has been assembled you should top it all off using the last of the flat stones. If you find that you need to alter the shape of any of the stone then do so using a chisel and mallet. Finally, fill in all of the cracks and crevices using the last of the small stones.

These are the steps you should take in order to build your own garden stone wall.
