How to Start Building Garden Pond

Building a garden pond is a fun weekend project to have, it can soon develop into a hobby that has you tinkering in the garden every spare moment that you have. Before you head to the garden supply store to look for materials you need to think about is what you want to do with your garden pond.

This planning step is often neglected when building a garden pond. It’s also the most important step of building a garden pond. The biggest regret of many people when starting a water feature is to build the pond too small. If you intend to build a koi pond then the smaller it is the less fish you can have in it.

Depth And Size

The depth and size of your pond are important when you are building a garden pond. If you intend to have koi in your water feature then it will need to be much large than your average garden pond. This is because koi have a reputation of growing to quite large sizes.

There should be an area of the pond that is at least three feet deep. However it is recommended that the depth be around four to five feet deep. A capacity of 1000 gallons at the very least is recommended when building a garden pond for koi.

If all you want to have in your pond is a few goldfish then the size and depth can be considerably reduced. If the climate you live in does not have winter or very mild winters then a pond with a depth of about two feet in one area should suffice. On the other hand if you do have winter weather then a depth of at least 16 inches is needed to avoid the pond freezing solid.

Position

The right location is important when you are building your garden pond. Make sure when you are building a garden pond that it is away from trees. Leaves and other debris will need to be removed from the pond constantly otherwise. You should also make sure that run off from rain does not contaminate your garden pond.

When building your garden pond the best place in the garden would be somewhere sunny. This will help to attract birds, frogs, and other wildlife. Aquatic plant life is an important part of a thriving garden pond. You will find that it keeps the water healthy and whatever fish you decide to have will greatly benefit from this addition.
