Wire A Bonsai Tree

Learning how to effectively wire a Bonsai tree is the number one thing that you can do to create your Bonsai. Here's how to wire a Bonsai:

Get your wire Wire usually comes as either copper or aluminum wire. Choose a gauge that is roughly 1/3rd of the size of your branch. Remember, you can always double back on your branch if you need to get extra strength. You can buy Bonsai wire on the internet, and it's not very expensive so don't worry.

Give it a base If you're wiring the trunk, you'll need to start by 'anchoring' your wire around the bottom of the tree. Wrap it around a couple of times, and then you can go up the tree. Some people like to wrap it around the roots. If you are wiring a branch, then wrap around the trunk, again to 'anchor' it.

Go up! Wrap the wire around the tree kind of like a barbershop pole. Don't make the angle too sharp or too flat - about 45 degrees will work wonderfully. DON'T bend the tree as you go up. Simply focus on getting the wire perfectly wrapped around the tree. You can focus on making the bend in the next step. If you think the branch or trunk will need more of a 'tug' to it, then you may need to double back the wire down the tree.

Bend Bend your branch or trunk gently into the position you want it. You may only be able to go so far safely - that's OK. You don't want to snap a branch or damage your tree. Also, don't mess around with it too much, know what your position is before you bend it so you don't stress your tree too much.

Maintain Once the branch is in position, you will need to check on the branch daily. Check to see that it looks healthy, and if it needs to be re bent back into the position that you want it. Take photos if you have to (from the safe location for reference). Also, check the bark. You don't want the bark to grow up and around the wire - this produces an effect that everyone universally hates.

Remove Once the tree has been bent into the position that you want, it's time to remove the wire. Don't make the mistake of trying to unwrap your wire to remove it. Get a pair of close Bonsai wire cutters and snip it off. Some people like to save their wire to use it later, but removing wire in this fashion can damage your tree and snap branches. BE CAREFUL, and when in doubt, snip it off!

So there we are. Wiring a Bonsai tree need not be a difficult task. It's just a case of following good common sense. That's how you wire a Bonsai tree.
