Orchid: the base is dangerously thin

Question
Hi.
This mt first orchid. it had purple flowers, and the stem is not that thick.
Leaves are about8cm long and 1cm wide max. I keep it in a small pot of
diameter 8cm in my room.

So now, the base of the stem is much too thin for the stalk to stay up. I am
even amazed that it is still living.  So the base is loose.....the TOP part of the
stem is about 8mm thick , but the base is 3mm thick!! It looks dry., not green
like the top parts. The leaves are still green, but they are slightly wrikled and
one or two yellow spot.

I'm at lost here:(
Plz help me take care of my ORchid

Answer
Hi Siegfrid,

I'd love to help with your orchid but you did not tell me what kind of orchid it is.  From your description, it sounds like it might be what is known as a miniature orchid.  Your description of what the orchid looks like helps but only a little as there are many orchids that look similar in growth habit.

If there is a tag with the name of the orchid, can you write back with that information and I'll try to help you.

In the mean time, if the growths will not stand up by themselves, you can help support them by placing a thin (about 2mm diameter) stick deep into the pot next to the growth and tying it to the stick.  Do not tie it too tightly, just enough to support it.

Sorry I could not be of more help at this time.  Will wait to hear back from you with the name of the orchid.
