yellow leaves on my peace lillies

Question
I have had my peace lillies for almost a year, and we have battled the fungal gnats, changed the soil, fertilized, wiped leaves down, and tried to give them proper light. However, I noticed recently that most of the new growth we are seeing are coming up yellow and sickly, and wilt within a couple of days. Is this associated with the fungal gnats that have also returned, or is it time to re-soil, it has been about 6 months since we changed soils? Please let me know, as these 6 plants are from my Mother in laws funeral, and we have become quite attached to them. Thanks!

Answer
Hello Chris,

My goodness yet another peace lily with a problem!

Since you repotted your plants about six months ago it is not time yet to do it again.  They should be repotted every year in the Spring.

It sounds as if you have done everything humanly possible to save your plants.  Have you investigated the roots?  Are they rotting?  i.e. are they brown and mushy due to overwatering?  If the entire root ball is then it's best to throw away the plant, but, if only some of the roots are affected then you could cut these off and leave the root ball to dry out before replanting in a clean pot with fresh potting compost.  Usually there is enough fertiliser in fresh compost to last 2 to 3 months.

If the plant has insects or is diseased then you need to identify these and treat accordingly with insecticide or fungicide.   Are all 6 plants affected?

I do hope the above suggestions will be of help to you.  Good Luck

Diana
