High nitrogen content

Question
I recently purchased a high nitrogen fertilizer and was going to put this on my evergreens (arbovite, pines, yews, junipers) and trees (oak, hickory)and ground cover (ivy, purple wintercreeper). Then my landscaper said this would kill them.
1) where do I use this high nitrogen stuffand
2) what should I put on the above.

Answer
high N fertilizers are for use on lawns. scotts TB is approximately 32-6-2 (NPK) in composition of nitrogem, phosphorous, & potassium. there are reasons for this. lawns need high N to maintain their green appearance, P for good root development, and K for general good health. these fertilizers also help keep the soil pH at 6-7 where turf grasses like it best. too acidic soil pH in lawns will encourage weed growth.
high N fertilizers will burn most landscape plants. evergreens like lower levels of NPK (6-4-2 or other). they also like more acidic(lower pH) soil. most shade trees like more of an even NPK formulation. some like acidic soil pH similar to evergreens.
get to a local garden center/nursery to see what they carry in a pre-mixed tree, evergreen, rose, garden plant, etc. product. i prefer espoma brand fertilizers. hollytone for acid loving pH plants, treetone for most trees, rosetone for roses, etc. you sprinkle 1-3 coffee cupfulls on the ground around the base of the plant & let the rain deliver it to the root system. scott TB lawn products are probably the best for turf areas. buy the fertilizers from your local garden center/nursery and they should be glad to teach you about landscape fertilizers.
