indoor basil

Question
Good Afternoon, Baker,
I live in zone 7 and my question regards basil planted indoors.  I planted some last year indoors and the basil has grown well.  Various books indicate that basil will roughly last a year before the leaves fade and seeds take their place, but all the books indicate this information for outdoor planting.
Should I expect basil planted indoors to last for a year as well?
Thank you!
Ira

Answer
With proper care, Ira, you should be able to keep your basil going for a long time. The main reason the basil doesn't last outdoors is, they do not tolerate cold temperatures. But, as soon as the night temperatures get above 57 degrees, put your pot out in a sunny location. They like full sun, sheltered from wind and rain. They have an extreme need for warmth. They will cease to grow at temperatures below 57 degrees. Never allow the soil to dry out. Feed every 4 weeks. Pinch tips to promote improved branching. The best basil for containers is 'Balkin-star'. It gets only 8 to 10 inches high.
