sand amendment

Question
James
I live in western Canada,Zone 2.Soil is clay and pretty hard.
My lawn does OK even though I dont have underground sprinkers.
My neighbour just finished a new paver driveway and he has a lot of leftover sand.Kind of a fine gravel really. He is trying to pwn it off to me.
I thought I could use it either to top dress the lawn,or maybe work it into my small garden. What do you think?

Answer
Hi Barry, Adding an inch or so to your garden and tilling it into the top 8" - 10" of soil would be OK, but I'd add organic matter (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) at the same time.  I don't see any benefit with top dressing your lawn.
It will not "work it's way" into the soil. What's likely to happen is the growth point of your grass moves upward into the sand where it is likely to be winter damaged.
If you are satisfied with the results of your garden now, then why fix what ain't broke? Let him keep his sand.  Jim
