sand in my lawn

Question
About two weeks ago I had top-soil delivered, I had my yard aerate, seeded and lime put down. I water it everyday.  Grass is growing in patches and my yard is full of sand.  I just want to have a beautiful lawn can you tell me what happened and what to do to combat the sand

Answer
Hi B.
Just go to an organic program, year after year, organics improves your lawn.
I would also make a compost pile and top dress with good compost every spring. Make more compost through the year, and when you get enough to put a ( thin even ) layer of it on your soil, and it is ready to use, spread it around.
If the sand was not already there, then it was not good topsoil you got.
Unless there is so much sand your soil will not hold water more than just one day, and drains so that there is no moisture 3 or 4 inches down, when they top is dry after a day or two, then I would call that company and tell them what they sent you, and demand the rectify it with some good quality top soil put over what you have.
With an organic program, it is more about what you DON'T do to get a good lawn, not what you do.
Using chemicaals just makes problems, and the fertilizers, weed killers, insecticides and fungicides are just band aids that you have to keep reapplying.
With organics, you do very little, spend very little, and your soil just gets better all the time.
If your soil is holding water well ebough to keep it moist so after your grass gets some roots developed, you can ewater once a week, then you are in good shape.
Water deeply, to a depth of at least 6 inches, to develope a deep root system.
A deep root system helps protect against heat, cold and drought damage, and prevents thatch.
Earthworms, and other beneficial insects will tunnel through your soil, keeping it aerated, and improving the qwhauliy of it.
Beneficial microbes work year round enriching your soil.
Fertilizers and other chemicals just kill off all these natural gardeners.
Putting sugar on your lawn, at the rate of 4 pounds per 1000 sq.ft or lawn, nourishes those microbes and keeps them working to enrich your soil.
Weeds like poor soil, and will not thrive in rich soil,so make rich soil, and weeds won't grow in your yard.
