improving soil

Question
Hello Jim.

(1) How does one add organic material (manure etc) to a flower bed when the bed is covered with mulch?

(2) I didn't do any fertilizing in the spring. Is it too late to fertilize my trees and shrubs now (ie. mid-July)?

Thanks!........ Debra

Answer
Hi Deb, You can't add coarse organic material without removing the mulch and working it in.  You can, however, improve the soil by spraying with liquid manure, fish emulsion, seaweed, molasses, humates, etc.  All of these will help your microbial activity which will improve your soil over time.  Once doesn't help much.  It should be applied 4-6 times per year.
I'd have no problem fertilizing with an organic plant food like the ones above. Good for the soil and the plants.  Jim
