Type of seed that grows well in red clay soil

Question
My back yard will be leveled very soon (in a week or two at most) and I'd like to pick the type of grass seed that will thrive in red clay soil. I believe this "dirt" has a ph of about 7.5 (I had it checked two years ago). I believe I was told to use lime on it prior to seeding. What type grass seed should I sow once the yard is level? And, should the seed be covered with straw after sowing?

Answer
Hi Thomas, the pH is ok for most turf grass, in fact it's on the high side. A pH of 6.5 to 7 is preferable, but most grass will be ok at 7.5 and your fertilizer will most likely bring it down a little so you don't need to add lime.  I would not cover the grass with straw.  There is no need since the ground is level and straw usually introduces a world of weed seed.
As far as what type of grass, you didn't give me enough information.  It depends on where you live and how much sun or shade you are getting. For the best information on grass for your locale, go to an independent garden center, not a chain store.  Don't believe the TV commercial hype about grasses that are guaranteed to grow anywhere...it just ain't true.  Your local garden center will know which grass has proven the most dependable for your area and, just as important, the proper time of year to plant it.  They can also help you with any additional soil amendments you might need to get the grass established and start you on the correct care and feeding.  This is info you almost never get at a chain store.  Jim
