Blight in tomatoes

Question
Two years we haven't got harvest from our tomatoes. The tomato plants turned brown and dry near the bottom. Can we plant anything this year. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Yolande, That's easy to fix.  It's called blossom end rot and it's caused from a lack of calcium.  Check you pH and make sure it is around 6.5.  Calcium becomes locked up in wet soils and is not available to the plant.  So water thoroughly but infrequently and allow the soil to dry between watering.  You have no control over the rain, so if you see any signs of it starting, go to a local independent garden center and ask for Yield Booster or Stop Rot.  This is a liquid calcium you apply to the plant that quickly fixes the problem. Discard any tomatoes that show any signs of damage.  No need in wasting the plant's energy on these.  Jim
