bush beans in peat

Question
We built a new garden and added a lot of peat.  The bush beans are three inches tall and are curled up and rather dry looking.
Could the soil be too acidic?  Or could this be an insect problem?  Every plant looks the same.

What could we add to cut down on the acidity of the soil, if you think that this is the problem.

Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.5

Answer
Hi Morris, pH could be the problem or the peat itself may be the problem.  Check your pH, it should be around 6.5 to 7 for beans.  If it is lower, you can raise it with lime. How much lime will depend on how low the pH is.  4 lbs. of pelletized lime per 100 sq. ft. will raise your pH about 1/2 point.
Peat holds a lot of water and once it is dry, tends to repel water so you might have a water issue.  Start with the pH.  Often an independent garden center will test it for free and ask them what they think about the soil consistency.  If neither of these is the problem, let me know and we'll pursue other possibilities.  Jim
