Ornamental grass propagation

Question
Mike,

Good day...we just purchased a home and one of the first plantings we made were ornamental grasses including fountain grass. We were lucky enough to find a nursery that had much larger specimens than any other we saw. We bought all the three gallon size they had. My question is we would like more and can't find any so I thought about starting from seed and didn't know if there was a way to harvest any seed they might be producing now or if we should purchase seed as I saw some at outsidepride.com...(I also found this web site for the first time in this quest and think it will be a great resource for a lot of things we will be doing) Any help would be appreciated...we are in Cumberland, RI..Thanks! Kevin
( I also see there are a number of different founatin grasses and I could attach a picture if possible but from what I am reading it appears to have off white plumes currently)

Answer
Kevin, since most ornamental grasses are hybrids, they will not produce true to the parent plant.  Hybrids are bred for disease resistance and preferred growth habits.  To reproduce the same variety you have now, you are better off purchasing the seed from your local nursery or whatever source sells the variety you are looking for.

I hope this answered your question.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
