Question
hi , please tell me how to sow lychee trees, if its possible to grow them from seeds. thank you

Answer
Hi Irma,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, lychees are easy to germinate.  You must start with fresh seed, so buy some fresh lychee fruits and eat them or just harvest the seed and plant it immediately in a pot of fresh potting soil.  Make sure the seed is plant twice as deep as its length.  Keep it warm (about 75 degrees) in a bright warm windowsill.  Seeds should germinate in less than 2 weeks.  Remember, the seed MUST be fresh.  The seeds only retain viability for a few days once the frust has been removed.  The seedlings will develop a long tap root which will curl around the bottom of the pot.  Make sure you have a good sized pot.  It can take 7-20 years to get fruit depending upon conditions and most likely the fruit will be substandard.  Commercial growers use air-layering to produce new plants with quality fruit.  Lychees are not hardy where there are regular hard frosts.  They are best grown in South Florida and Southern California outside.  They will tolerate some mild frosts and can live in protected areas of the Gulf Coast and Southern Arizona.  They will grow fast up to 12 inches and then stop growing for a couple of years before they start growing again.  YOu can treat them as a house plant if you live in the north and keep the tree pruned as a small shrub.  I hope this helps.
Tom
