day lilies

Question
AFTER FLOWERING SOME OF MY DAYLILIES HAVE PODS ON THE DEAD STEM.  INSIDE THE PODS ARE BLACK SEEDS.  ARE THESE SEEDS FOR PLANTING?

Answer
Hi Loretta,
Thanx for your question.  You have seeds inside the pods of your daylilies.  You can plant them and see what you come up with.  I doubt that they will exactly resemble the parent plants but I think it would be fun to see what you might get.  The seeds require a cold treatment of at least one month to get good germination.  YOu can plant the seeds outdoors in a seed bed you prepare and keep free of weeds and grass and allow the seeds to winter over.  They should germinate in the spring after the last frost.  Or, you can start them indoors by planting them in a pot of good, moist (not soggy) potting soil about 1/4 inch deep and seal the pot inside a sealed plastic baggie.  Place in the fridge (not the freezer) for 30-60 days.  This should break the dormancy of the seeds.  They will germinate in a few weeks after they are brought out of the fridge and kept at about 75 F under 40 watt flourescent lights (suspended about 8 inches above).  You will not be able to put the seedlings outdoors until after the last frost and you will have to place the potted seedlings in a place outdoors that is safe from direct sunlight, extremes in wind, rain and temperatures for 10 days in order for the sedlings to be come used to the outdoors.  I hope this helps.
Tom
