Starting Lavendar

Question
I have tried growing this plant from seed and failed.  Will you tell me how to start this plant from seed.  Does it have to be refrigerated or something else that would help to give success?

Answer
Hi Joan,
Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry you're having trouble with lavendar from seed.  I have grown in by seed on a number of occasions including the less-hardy Spanish and French varieties.  Here's how I do it.

In February, I purchase new seeds (you may also save seeds from the previous Autumn by putting them in a clean, dry, glass jar and store in a dark, cool place.). Fill a pot with good, moist (not soggy) potting soil.  Sprink the seed on top and then press them into the soil and sprinkle enough soil on top to cover the seeds.  I use a thin layer of milled sphagnum moss (available at nurseries and garden centers) which helps keep down damping off disease which is a fungus that often attacks seedlings grown indoors.  Seal the pot inside a large, clear plastic baggie or cover with some kind of clear plastic sheeting.  Keep warm (70-80 degrees F).  I have never had a problem getting lavender to germinate at about 70-75 F.  Germination should occur in about 2- 3 weeks.  Once the seedlings begin to germinate, place the pot 8 inches beneath a standard 40-watt floursecent shoplight.  These cost $9-15 at Walmart and DIY stores.  Raise the light as the seedlings grow.  After the seedlings are about 2 or 3 inches tall, you can gently prick them out of the growing medium and plant in separate pots or cells.  Keep them under lights and start feeding them a 1/2 solution of fish emulsion every 10-14 days.  After the last frost, place the seedlings in a place outdoors that is protected from direct sunlight and extremes in temperature, rain, wind and hail for about 10 days.  This acclimatizes the seedlings.  After that, plant the seedlings in the border in direct sunlight.  I hope this helps.
