zones appropriate for growing Italian Cypress

Question
Is Lassen County a good place to grow Italian Cypress trees? If so, where would I find non-hybrid italian cypress seeds?

Answer
Hi Donna,
Thanx for your question.  USDA Zones 7-9 are the recommended hardiness zones for Cupressus sempervirens (Italian Cypress tree).

Here are several places you might look for seeds.

You indicated Lassen County.  It looks like most of it is in Zone 7, however, the elevation suggests you may have some issues with early and late frosts from time-to-time and varying weather patterns that might not be conducive to successfully growing the Italian Cypress.  This tree is native to the warm, dry, climates of the Mediterranean.  Excessive cold spells and snow will be harmful to the trees.  Have you noticed if anyone else is growing the trees?  You may also want to check with your local office of the UC Davis California Cooperative Extension.  They should have a horticultural agent that can advise you on the success you can expect to have cultivating this tree in your area.  See link below.

I hope this helps.
