fig trees

Question
will fig trees grow in the sandy soil very close to the beach (within 200 ft) in oxnard, ca.

Answer
Hi Frank,
Thanx for your question.  I'm not a fruit or tree expert so I don't have first-hand knowledge of growing figs so close to the ocean.  The reference below shows that figs are grown extensively in the Fresno, Madera, Imperial and Riverside counties, which as you know are well into the interior of the state.  Although, the climate in Oxnard would be beneficial for growing figs and I don't think sandy soil would be an issue, the salty air might.  I would consult with the UC-Davis Extension for Ventura County.  Someone there will be able to give you exact information for your area for growing figs.  I have found most of the County Extension agents to be most helpful and the information is free from your state's agricultural college.  I hope this helps.
